I want to show you some cute ideas that might help you in your Christmas decorating this year! As most of you know by now, I really, really like cute old things that are rustic, and antique; items which may have belonged to family members, or that I have found at yard sales. These interesting "treasures" make such a difference when you are decorating a small vignette in your home. They have so much character, and mixed with a few of your newer items can help you in coming up with very interesting Christmas decorating ideas.

Just look at this picture of a small table in my home…and yes…it did come from a yard sale! Anyway, what I really want to point out to you is the old Toms Peanut jar right in the center!

 

Our family has a tradition where we make something that my husband's Mom calls "trash". This "trash", or trail mix as a lot of people call it, is really just a mixture of Chex mix, pretzels, M&M's, and lots more!

 

My antique peanut jar is the perfect thing to serve our "trash" out of. On this same table, is my Mother's antique lamp with an old red shade. It is really too short for this table, so, as you can see, I used a stack of my gardening books to raise it up to the right height. Here is a wonderful hint: always…always buy interesting gardening or bird books at yard sales, and books with beautiful covers! It doesn't really matter what is in them or if you'll ever look at them. I have used these in displays throughout my home as the perfect addition when I am putting a grouping together.

 

 

 

Let's look at the picture above. I am leaving this picture just a little bigger because I really want you to see the details in this one.

 

First, take a look at this old box. It is so old that it is put together by dowels…no nails or glue. I wish you could see the old forged hinges on the top and back, and then you would really know how old this one is. My husband's grandfather kept nails in it for many years in his blacksmith shop.

 

This is really one of my favorite things to work with and try out different ideas on. Normally during the year, I keep a bunch of ivy to the right and trailing out the side, and down the edge of my table. Then I keep some of my bird, and gardening books standing up in it. Can you see the large bird nest with eggs and the two real-looking birds on the side? So cute, aren't they?

 

This is very easy to adapt to a Christmas display. All I did was stand up my red metal, glittering Christmas tree in the back, add a few Christmas greens with red berries on top of the ivy that was already there, and then include my sweet Santa Elf! Isn't he wonderful? He bends in all directions, and I have three, so you might find one holding onto the side of my mixer in my kitchen, or hanging upside down from a light which hangs over my island, or sitting in an antique box such as this one is. These are so much fun, and they find different homes each and every Christmas Season!

 

Here is a picture of the shelf the antique box sits on. I am always changing it, but you can see I don't clear everything off to decorate for Christmas – I just add Christmas items to what is already there. This works much better…looks pretty…and lots less work.

The abundance in America is much greater than the rest of the world can imagine… we take so very much for granted. I personally thank God every day for His Grace and His Mercy and His touch in our lives. I also thank Him every day for family, blessings, and the health we enjoy as well as my business, which has allowed me to become friends with many people throughout the world. I receive emails from many of you who share with me a similar fight with debilitating illnesses. It's through our shared enjoyment of floral design that we have been brought together to encourage each other along life's path. I thank God for EACH of YOU! ====================================== Time to Decorate…Lots to do! Let's Get Started!   Fond Memories… This is the week I start my Christmas decorating every year! The anticipation and excitement I feel about this time reminds me of when I was a little girl. We didn't have many decorations, as a matter of fact, there were very few. My sisters and I looked forward to trekking out in the woods with Daddy to find the "perfect" small cedar tree which held our worn, well-used, and VERY special treasures to adorn our Christmas tree. All of our ornaments and decorations were in one small box in the attic. We used this same box for as many years as I can remember. Multi-colored light strands with pointed lights were wound around the outside of the tree after we spent many hours searching for and replacing burned out bulbs. Our special, mostly hand-made ornaments were positioned carefully – each in the "perfect" spot. Then…the very best part of all… our Mother pulled out the small narrow box of "tinsel" with its long silver strands. She divided this tinsel into three sections giving each of us enough to fill our little hands as we began hanging these, one-by-one, from every delicate branch on our tree. The three of us… my sisters and I, gently draped these until there were no more left. We were filled with awe and wonder when the house lights were turned off and the tree lights came on… the tinsel shining and sparkling amidst the tree lights. That was, and will forever be, the prettiest tree I have ever seen! And then, after Christmas, the memories of Mother taking down those precious silver icicles will never leave me. The three of us watched as she ran her beautiful slim fingers down each shiny delicate strand before putting them carefully back in their box… preserving them for yet other Very Special Christmas! Making New Memories… Things have changed; times are different; and it's now time to pull our own decorations down from the attic. For the many years I owned my shop, and now with my Internet business from my home, I want to re-create that same joy and child-like wonder in you by filling your home and your lives with beautiful wreaths and florals – whether I make them for you, or I teach you to make your own! Today, I Want to Talk About Wrapping Presents! When I get ready to wrap my presents, I start by purchasing my wrapping paper. I buy a large roll, or several rolls if need be, of a good thick paper with a pretty pattern on it. In the picture above, you'll see that I used paper with holly leaves and berries, with Merry Christmas written on it in gold. This is usually my less expensive paper, but none-the-less, I make sure it has a pattern that I love and the colors that I want my presents to be wrapped in. I use this paper for all my large packages as well as some smaller ones. I then look for two more paper designs for my holiday presents. Above, you'll see that I found a beautiful foil stripe of red and green with a little gold stripe. I always choose a pretty solid-colored foil; this year it's a shiny red. Notice that the colors in all three of these papers compliment each other. For those of you who make your own wreaths, I know you must have many left over green twigs lying around. These are pieces that remain from a wreath that you just didn't use and they weren't large enough or enough of them to make another wreath. Well, as you can imagine… I have many of these! As a matter of fact, I have filled several containers full. And, if you make bows, I am absolutely sure you have pieces of ribbon lying around that were not nearly long enough to do anything else with, so you considered tossing them. Well…. Don't!!! If you aren't a floral designer, start saving pieces of ribbon from parties and gatherings. Look for really cheap rolls of ribbon after Christmas. You'll be glad you had them next year! Looking in this picture, you'll see so many different types, colors, and styles of ribbon. These are pieces from my wreath-making, and from gifts I have received through the years. Some of the ribbon is very expensive, wired ribbon, and then some is very cheap, unwired ribbon I picked up for practically nothing.. These ribbons are tied onto the packages in a variety of ways – some just looped around one time and tied like a shoestring bow; some are tied around in both directions, with a small bow placed in the center; and then there are some which are looped around and tied in a knot with no loops or bows at all. The possibilities are endless. Don't these look so much better than the stick-on bows purchased at the store? There is one more tip I want to give you concerning your wrappings. Did you notice the greens, berries and pine cones. Well, the pine cones were picked up in my yard. Any size, shape, form, or fashion will do. I tend to like the long skinny ones, which come from a white pine tree, but use whatever you can get your hands on. Even stems which have nuts or acorns will slide in under a bow and look great. Save trinkets you come across through the year. Think of bows and packages when you are at yard sales – be creative! After all, I think the best part of gift-giving is the anticipation in their eyes before they even open it. As far as greens go, use whatever you find available. Notice, no two of mine are the same. I have purchased a very cheap garland before with a mix of different types of greenery and red berries. One of those would cut up nicely to wrap your presents with. If you don't have any artificial greens, then use fresh ones. Just wait a little closer to Christmas to wrap them so they will still look fresh and pretty. Oh, they will smell wonderful too. Cedar and pine are GREAT for this!   Then after you have everything assembled, start having fun!  Get out your glue gun, or if you don't have a glue gun, string will be great.  Tuck some things under the bow, into the bow loops, and right in the center – middle of the bow.  Get creative… I know YOU can do it!  Everyone will be reluctant to open their presents this year!!! I know these wrappings look expensive, but, believe me… they are not! Nancy Recommends: Upcoming Events: About Nancy: ============================================= "Christmas…So Soon? How we Decorate at Our House"     It just hit me…Today!  Yes, Thanksgiving is only a week away, and for me, in addition to a wonderful Thanksgiving meal shared with family and friends…we will start decorating for Christmas!  Well, actually we will start decorating just a little before Thanksgiving, but we'll finish the outside the day after.  What are your plans??  This really is a "big" deal in our home!  If you can imagine being in the floral design business for so long and having a "Christmas Shop" each year for many years, I was always so tempted to "bring my work home with me"!  I just had to have that extra-special treasure or that Santa that I couldn't live without — to make  decorations in our home different and unique.  I suppose you could say we do it right when it comes to our Christmas decorating!  We have so many decorations, in fact, that I do not remember a year when we have actually used everything at once.  The one exception was maybe in 2006 when our home was on a tour of homes…that year, I guess we came as close as we ever have to using all our decorations at one time! Each box has to be brought down from the attic before the decision is made as to what we will use and what may end up going back up the steps and waiting until next year!  WOW, just writing about all this really gets me in the mood.  My mind is whirling around with thoughts of what I need to do.  I am already thinking about where things will go this year so that our grandchildren have lots of fun in our "Christmas House"!   ============================================= "Christmas Trees!  Let's Get Started…I'm Ready to Decorate!"   A Christmas tree is the focal point of your decorating, right? Or should I say Christmas Trees?! I'll bet many of you are like me and have a Christmas tree, sometimes more than one, in every room in your home. I want to encourage you to start looking around your home, looking for dark, out of the way spots where a small lighted Christmas tree can really brighten that area and your life.  It will bring special interest to an area which is normally overlooked!  You'll be surprised at the difference it will make and you'll even be more surprised at how much it will "seem" to enlarge your living space.  These unique and special trees are found in our house in many locations.  There is our extra large tree that completely blocks our front door; nine feet tall, and at least five feet wide. Since all our doors are glass, this is the one everyone can see as they ride by or arrive at one or our Christmas gatherings. Then there is the slim two foot tree on the nearby table which I LOVE! This is my "bird tree" and is filled with nests, leaves, and berries. An elf table tree is in the center of our island in the kitchen where cute elves and Byers' Choice Carolers abound in all shapes and sizes. Without going into great detail about each and every tree in our home, there is a small, two or four foot tree in each bedroom and bathroom, slim pencil trees on either side of our front door, and two four foot table trees lighting our long back porch.   Oh, and I musn't leave out my very favorite trees – the ones in our pergola. Their heights vary between five, seven, and nine feet tall and I cluster them all together. These tall, slim pencil trees are tied together and also tied to the arbor which encircles our favorite enclosure. They are filled with "outdoor" surprises such as birds, nests, and wild berries — fresh ones, such as nandina, holly, and whatever else I can find outside. You can just barely see them in this picture. This was taken about three years ago.  The pergola is now totally closed in on the top and all the sides with wisteria, and lady banks climbing rose bushes. It's like a secret garden out there! We also go out and pull down fresh honeysuckle vine from the nearby woods – yes, the very same honeysuckle that I use in almost all of my wreaths. We twist, curl, and tie these together around all three trees at once in many wild and curly shapes. They actually look like vines have grown right up around them where they stand. After dark they look so inviting we just cannot resist enjoying this outdoor space with a fire in the fire pit blazing away right in the center. Jumping ahead a little in this issue, I want you to start thinking about what your favorite Christmas colors may be…and I want you to be prepared for the Christmas Season ahead.  What are your favorite Christmas colors? Are there any specific ones, which you prefer, more than any other? Do you like them all – the reds, greens, burgundies, and golds? This article is about using color at Christmas. And I don't mean just any color or a combination of two colors, or possible three colors? No ma'am, I mean COLOR – all colors. You will be surprised at how it can brighten your home, your lives and your Christmas spirit. Years ago, when I first married, I used red – yes, plain old red…..I thought everything in my home had to be red. I don't even remember using gold with it! Yep, I know what you're thinking, and yes, I have changed so much since then – it doesn't even feel like that was me, but it was. We all go through changes in our lives which affect our decorating tastes. Our own personal style is affected by what we see in department stores, on television, on pages of our favorite magazines, or even just a dear friend's home and the choices that they make during Holiday seasons. This picture is just a small example of my table last year for a Christmas party.  I used fresh potted plants of pink, red & white (sitting on antique pedistals, by the way.  Throughout the kitchen and the rest of my house I also had red, green , purple (lots – I like it!),  gold, blue, and even orange.  And, believe me, my home was very festive! After the period in my life where red was "the" color, I then went to burgundy and gold. But each year as I pulled out my favorite ornaments, there were many – but they didn't "go" anymore. So…. It was time….One year, I made a very decisive choice that if I liked something, then it would match in my home. If I like it, no matter what style, shape, or color, there really was an absolutely perfect spot for it! That was when my eye for decorating, color, and style changed forever. This kind of style is now what we call eclectic, or whimsical… or any other number of descriptive words. The point that I want to get across to you today is: don't lock yourself into one or two or three colors, or styles. Take a chance this year, and do something a little different, add many ribbons of many colors – buy XL glittering tree balls from local craft and hobby stores, make special ornaments with your children and grandchildren, fill you tree with stems of flowers and fillers in many colors, pull out everything you have not used in years because it didn't match any more, and have lots of fun! I'm telling you, these choices can make your Christmas bright and cheery!!! Take my word for it, you'll be so much happier. I am filled with so much joy by the smallest things, and color is probably at the top of the list. My Christmas tree now has red, burgundy, blue, gold, purple, golden yellow, plus lots more. There are now no limits, I use all of my favorite, and special ornaments….including the special ones my grandmother cherished. I have huge ribbon toppers for my tree out of very colorful ribbon with red, gold, purple and burgundy. But then right in the middle of those XL bows, I have tied another bow out of golden yellow burlap. For these burlap bows, I went to the cloth store and bought it by the yard. I then cut it in very wide strips and tied bowties out of it – large ones!! Two of these are on the top of my tree, another hangs from the side of my XXL Christmas wreath on my front door, and then two more are anchored on the sides of the pots which hold my lighted 4 foot trees on either side of my front door. If I like something, and it is reasonably priced (preferably from a yard sale, or flea market – tee, hee hee), then it comes home with me – and yes, there will be an absolutely "perfect" spot for it. All of my furniture in my home is interchangeable as are each of my favorite rugs. Style and color does not keep a bedroom chair from looking great in my den. I'm so Happy to Have You Join My New Series on "Creative Ideas for Small Spaces"     Hi, I hope you are enjoying this wonderful weather just as I am!  I absolutely LOVE Fall!  It truly is my most favorite season of the year. There is a smell in the air…yes, oh yes…can it be just the first hints of fall?  I know it is coming – soon!  Leaves are starting to fall off our River Birch trees, and they are turning the slightest shades of yellow, orange, and burgandy.  Now that I think about it, maybe that is one of the reasons I like fall so much.  Not only does it have to do with smells, breezes, cooler temperatures, but…yes…it's the colors too. Yes, I do admit…I'm just a "color" person!  There is not one single color that I do not like.  And there is not one color that you cannot find in my home.    Not too long ago, my husband and I were making lists of our "favorite things".  And, one of the very first things on my list, besides God, Steve, and my family was "dancing leaves".  Do you know what dancing leaves are?  I suppose I came up with that name many years ago as I was driving down the road after leaves had fallen the day before.  As I looked in the rear view mirror of my car, I could see the leaves in all shapes and colors "dancing" on the street behind as my car swooshed over them.  Look for your dancing leaves this fall.  It makes me happy — to be alive and to be so very blessed!   Oh… and today is my birthday!  I am now 60 years old. I am just so happy to be alive and experiencing what are the VERY BEST years of my life!  I appreciate each and every one of you, and love it that you have chosen to spend some of your precious time with me every week!  Oh, and I am still receiving "inspiring" emails from so many of you!  I LOVE IT!   Keep them coming!       Please feel free to pass this newsletter along to friends and relatives:  Membership is FREE!  You'll be receiving more GREAT information in weekly issues!   OUR SECRET PROJECT IS GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER!   This latest newsletter is online at: http://ladybugwreaths.net/news/  http://nancysramblings.com/?page_id=308 ————————————————————   Our New Six Week Series: "Creative Ideas For Small Spaces" Join me each week for hints and tips on decorating the small spaces in your in your life and home!  Let's revive it and give it a new feel and look!   These small spaces which may be tucked into a dark corner, niche or cubby are often overlooked.  It is easy to think that since these are so small and dark no one will notice anyway.  My goal is to show you just how special these tiny surprises in our homes can be.  They complete your decorating in such a way that you will be thrilled!  They draw your eye to places you really never pay any attention to!    You'll have friends and neighbors peeking around just to see what treasures you tucked here and there.  They aren't necessarily meant to be seen when someone walks in your door, but they are small places to display your favorite things — the things in your life which may bring a smile and a tug on your heartstrings.   ————————————————————   Last week I asked you to start clearing the clutter off of furniture, walls, corners, etc.  I have found a place to put all of my things until I find the "perfect" place to display them.    During this process, I was brutal — and yes — messy!  I threw away and gave away many things which I did not want, did not need, and really didn't like.  Why have those things taking up space in your home when you can fill those same spaces with heart-warming special "treasures"? ————————————————————   Our Special Idea for This Week:   You might say "I am a collector of sorts"…or "I LOVE eclectic things"…or "I am drawn to antiques and old things".  The truth be known…for me…it is all of the above.  So, when I am moving things around in my home and re-decorating, I pull out all of my older, special "treasures" which mean so much to me.   I want to show you how I chose to start redoing a small, but…oh so cute…spot in my home.  Actually, when we were building, it was supposed to be a small coat closet.  When the contractor started framing it in, I stopped him cold in his tracks and asked that he tear out all the framing.  I DID NOT want a coat closet that would have been so small!     Yes, I know, I am sure those men were talking and laughing about me as they left that day, but I didn't care.  This spot has opened up what would have been a narrow, dark, short hallway, and now it has become a very special spot — one that makes  everyone want to look and take it all in when I change it out for each season, and often in-between!   You can see the niche I am talking about in the picture above.  I had a shelf built similar to a mantle in the top which spans from wall to wall.  I usually keep an old clock, a basket with greens, and an old board game tucked above.  Then, it just happened that I had a cute old distressed white bench which fit right into my niche.  It holds items I want to display quite nicely.   Oh the right, you'll see my antique picnic baskets stacked up.  This is where I have a lamp which lights my little niche.  There is an old urn with greens, and an old window I picked up on the side of the street!  (Yes, don't say it…. I am one of those people who stops when I see what I think is a treasure lying on the street waiting for the trash truck!)     My most favorite aspect of this display is the old window I have standing in the corner.  The glass panes are all there, but the white paint is cracked and chipping…and oh, how I love it!   Now, we're going to talk about pictures!  You know, the ones you probably have boxes of tucked here and there — the ones you love which bring back so many smiles of happy menories.  Well, I have decided that I want to come up with creative ways to enjoy and share these special photographs.  I just do not have enough wall space to display all that I would want in frames…so, here is a very special and different way to do it.    I used double sided tape and displayed our special black and white photographs of Austin with his parents.  I strategically placed these pictures on the old glass panes of this old window.  And then I tucked some ivy in the upper corner just to soften the harsh edges — ivy bunches are really great to use for that.  Do you have pictures you want to pull out and display?  Get creative….tuck them in spots no one would ever think of.  Put them out where you can and will enjoy them.  Fill your life with the smiles and joys of children, parents, and grandchildren!       ————————————————————     I will give you more ideas in next week's issue of Ladybug Wreaths FREE Newsletter.  And, don't forget, we will be talking about this subject for the next five weeks.  I will be posting pictures each week.  We will discuss why I put each grouping together, why certain colors, and what is pleasing to the eye.     Start thinking of your plans for fall decorating including arrangements, pumpkins, scarecrows, and more!  I already am and we'll talk more about that next week.  Fall is such a fun season leading into Halloween!          Thanks for taking the time to read this You'll never guess what we've been working on!     Blessings… Nancy   http://www.ladybugwreaths.com http://www.nancysramblings.com  Visit my new blog!   Editor:  Ladybug Wreaths Newsletter email us:  nancy@ladybugwreaths.com

I don't know about you, but this happens to me from time to time, and it hit me this weekend.  I don't have any warning and really never know why, especially right now!  If you knew everything I was working on, every wreath design, video, coaching session and eBook that are taking up all of my time, you wouldn't believe it.  But, I have found that these are the times that I get the F-E-V-E-R… the fever to redecorate, to move every single thing that I own into a new and different location.  I am obsessed and cannot rest until I do it. With the change of the seasons, I am thinking you would like  a new look also.  I know, I know, you are thinking;   "I just cannot  afford to do anything like that now"'.   Ahhhh, but I beg to differ…I happen to know that you really CAN!     So, for the next six (6) issues of my newsletters,       I am going to help you and inspire you!  I will use different displays,        vignettes, cubbies, etc. and redesign or redecorate them. You will have a new look and a new lease on life at the same time!     Oh, how much fun we are going to have!  Most of my ideas and suggestions will not cost you a single thing.  But there will be a few inexpensive suggestions I will make also.  You can then choose to try them or not.  It will be completely up to you.      I am going to give you new ideas as to how to display the same things you have owned for years.  And I'm talking about things like your g randmother's china which is so pretty, but you wouldn't dare eat off of it… what about hanging it on the wall in your bedroom, or displaying the creamer or sugar bowl in your bath?    We will be exploring so many different ideas that I know you are going to LOVE!  These ideas will make your "trinkets & treasures" look totally different and new.  Your friends will see things that you have owned for years,  but will probably be thinking they are new because they have never seen them before.   ————————————————————     Homework For This Week: In this week's issue, I'll tell you how to get started.  You can literally take all of your "things" and put them in a guest room, bonus room, etc.  If you are like me, things just start piling up here and there, and some of these things I really don't want, but just need somewhere to tuck them while I decide what I want to do with them.   Okay…this is it.  Get everything down – this is what I am going to do.  If this seems a little drastic to you, just start one room at a time.  If even this seems a little drastic, then do it in your mind - or make notes.  Do whatever you feel comfortable with!    ————————————————————      I want you to begin sorting your "trinkets & treasures" into three distinct categories:   Items which you absolutely LOVE and WANT displayed in your home. Gifts from people who are important to you that you really NEED to display. Winter rain was such a pain, but the flowers of Spring and Summer have been awesome! Gosh!…can it be?  Am I already feeling a hint of Fall in the air?   ———————————————————— Feels like I've been out of touch for such a long time with my customers and friends.  My husband and I experienced something in January, 2009 that I hope (I know!) we will never have to go through again.  It has taken us over 18 months to recover from that challenge, but God's a great rescuer!  Things are better than ever in the Alexander home, but I have really missed contact with my customers.  And speaking of the Alexander home…we have two (2) new grandbabies born in the last year!  If you would like to see pictures just hop on over to my blog; http://www.nancysramblings.com.     In fact, I was going through some old emails from some of you just the other night.  Those emails talked a little about floral design, but more about our relationships.  Back then, I returned a lot of your emails personally, and enjoyed doing that.  It felt good to be an encourager for many of you who are going through the anguish of Fibromyalgia, like myself.  You expressed concern about my health and I returned the concern with words of encouragement based upon my own steps toward recovery from that dreadful disease.     No, I'm not cured from Fibromyalgia…yet…but I am well on the way, thanks to God and some God-sent people in my life.  Of course, my husband is my biggest fan and helper, but God has led me to a great endocrinologist and an outstanding nutritionist who are miracle workers!   ————————————————————   But enough about me.  How are you doing?   How are your wreath and other floral projects coming along?
