Getting Ready for Fall…Nana’s Sweet Potato Cake

By Admin | September 23, 2011

I'm Getting Ready For Fall

Get Out The Pumpkins, Refresh Your Wreath

Summer is over, I am certainly ready for Fall, are you?

You've heard me say it before… and I just can't help saying it again! I LOVE FALL! I love the cool crisp air and going to football games. I really look forward to our annual apple-picking trip to the mountains. This year we hope to be able to take our grandson with us. I love "dancing leaves" when I look in my rear-view mirror as I drive down a leaf covered road!

I have been pulling out pumpkins, witches, spiders and ghosts that make our grandchildren squeel with delight! Oh, and talking about pumpkins, just ask my husband, I could spend a fortune on real pumpkins in all shapes and sizes… even down to the tiniest ones. So, I have to hold myself back now with our weather in South Carolina being so warm during Fall…making the pumpkins rot too quickly! What a shame!

My Wreaths are Ready to be Put
on My Doors as Soon as
I Freshen Them up a Little!

"How do you freshen up a wreath?" you might ask…. Well, I always add a little extra greenery and fall leaves if the birds picked at them during last fall. If there is an empty spot where it wasn't stored properly in our attic, I attach a new pumpkin or two. A few sponge mushrooms add that extra natural, wild touch. You can even walk around in your yard. Pick a bunch of berries which is starting to turn. A stem of bright orange leaves would last for about a week before you need to pull it out, filling in that spot with another outdoor treasure. Just look around, and see what you can come up with to accent your wreath. Let me know! I really would love to hear your thoughts and ideas! Why, we might even use them in a newsletter!

I posted on Facebook this morning about Nana's Sweet Potato Cake! And I told my Facebook friends that I just may… put the "SECRET" recipe for her Sweet Potato Cake in this newsletter! Well, I'll take a chance and hope that I don't get in trouble and give you the recipe for this "delicious" Fall treat!

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, if you haven't been to my Facebook Fan page, I would love for you to visit! Just click on the "Like" button while you're there, and you'll receive updates when I make posts (which is about every day). I talk about many different subjects, just as I do in my newsletters. Who knows… you may just luck up on a "secret special"!! Here is the link:

Quick Tip

Nana's Sweet Potato Cake

SWEET POTATO SURPRISE CAKE:

1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
2 cups sugar
4 eggs…separated
4 tbsp. hot water
2 1/2 cups cake flour…sifted
3 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 1/2 cups grated raw sweet potatoes
1 cup chopped nuts
1 tsp vanilla

Combine cooking oil & sugar and beat well. Add egg yolks and blend well. Add hot water then the dry ingredients which have been sifted together. Stir in grated potatoes, nuts, and vanilla and beat well. Beat the egg whites until stiff and fold into mixture. Bake in 3 greased 8" layer pans (with wax paper liners), and bake at 350 degrees for 25 – 30 minutes. Let layers cool good before frosting.

FROSTING:

1 large & 1 small can of evaporated milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 sticks margarine
3 egg yolks
1 3/4 cups coconut

Combine milk, sugar, margarine, egg yolks, and vanilla in a sauce pan. Cook over medium heat about 10 or 12 minutes, stirring constantly until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and add coconut. Beat and let it get almost cold and it will spread better.

The ironic part is that I have Celiac disease and am allergic to gluten – flour. I have never been able to taste this cake. But I can tell you that it smells absolutely scrumptuous, and everyone wants more and more. One piece of this cake is NEVER enough!

If you would like to read more about our "Nana", here is a link to a post where I wrote about her and her "Sweet Potato Cake" a couple of years ago: http://NancysRamblings.com/nana/ .

Website Platform: Word Press or Blogger

By Admin | September 23, 2011

Work From Home Ideas

Website Platform: WordPress or Blogger?

Every business needs a blog!

  • A blog is one of the easiest ways to get found by the search engines.
  • A blog provides a simple way to give people updates about your businessHow to create a blog
  • A blog is easy to learn to change on your own
  • A blog provides an RSS feed that allows to automatically get your news

First you have to choose the best blogging platform to meet your needs. A blogging platform is the software that enables you to transform your content into a website.

Two of the most popular blogging platforms are WordPress and Blogger.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these options. You can decide what is best for your business after reviewing the pros and cons.

BLOGGER

ADVANTAGES

  • Very easy to use
  • Easy to set up (just follow the steps)
  • Nothing to install
  • You don't need your own hosting
  • Free to use
  • You don't need a domain name
  • Posting is easy
  • Themes are easy to change

DISADVANTAGES

  • Limited flexibility – design of themes
  • Limited flexibility – functions
  • Domain name will be: "yourblogname.blogspot.com"
  • Ownership – this is my biggest problem with Blogger! Your content and blog reside on Google's servers. They can remove your blog!

WORDPRESS

NOTE: Wordpress.com is like Blogger in that there are limitations and ownership issues. However, I am going to be talking about WordPress.org which is installed on your hosting.

ADVANTAGES

  • Free to use – you can download and install the software for free
  • Installed on your hosting – you own it
  • Installed on your domain – you own it
  • Tons of diverse and unique themes which can give your website/blog a unique look
  • "Plugins" that are free which increase the functionality of your your blog/website
  • OWNERSHIP – You own the domain, the hosting and the website/blog
  • More professional
  • The functionality allows you to setup a website or a blog or a "website and blog"

DISADVANTAGES

  • More intimidating to setup
  • Will need to buy a domain name (this is optional for Blogger)
  • Will need to have hosting
  • More difficult to learn (once you learn how to add posts and pages, it is simple to maintain)

If you have a business, then I strongly recommend that you setup a WordPress blog on your own hosting. You maintain ownership and it looks more professional.

There is a place for Blogger!

If you have a personal blog, Blogger is great to use. I use Blogger to feed my main business site. Since Blogger is owned by Google, it gets indexed and has a high page rank. I create content on Blogger and link to my main website.

If you need help setting up your WordPress blog, we do it for you in BestofNancy.com. If you want to do it yourself, there are over 20 videos in Internet Tutor showing you step by step how to setup a WordPress blog on your hosting.

Sunflowers For Fall

By Admin | September 1, 2011

"Sunflowers For Fall" By, Nancy Alexander

Exerpt From "Sunflower Garden" E-Book!…

Today, I wanted to give you a FREE section from my "Best-Selling" E-Book on Wreath Design:
"Sunflower Garden"!

So, let's get started adding our flowers! As a rule, I usually start with the largest flowers first. Now, that is not always true, but I make that decision as I start each wreath. In this extra large wreath, I also have three very large sunflowers, so I feel like it would be better to get those placed before adding other smaller flowers. The fillers and berries are always added last.

The bright yellow Sunflowers and vivid Gerber daisies make this wreath really pop with color. Aren't they pretty? Let's begin this step with the first Sunflower. These three flowers have very long stems. Instead of cutting them, let's try curling them first!

Notice in this picture the way I have bent the stem into a loose curl. I am holding the sunflower close to the wreath to see how it will fit. Because the stem is so long and thick, I decided to bend the sunflower again. I really would like to use the curled stem and not have to cut it!

Sunflower stems add to the "wild & woodsy" feel of this wreath, don't you think? In this picture, I am bending the Sunflower into a tighter loop before I try placing it into the wreath again.

Twist and curl tightly because these stems are really thick and tough!
Placing these stems can be tricky, because they are so large. You want the Sunflowers to stick out from the wreath anywhere from ten to twelve inches like I am holding it in the picture below!

I finally found the perfect location and the Sunflower stem slid right in! Sometimes it takes a little work, but look how beautiful it looks with the curls of its stem twisted right in with the many loops and curls of fresh honeysuckle vines!

In my Instructional E-Book, "Sunflower Garden" you will learn how to make an absolutely GORGEOUS wreath like this one below! ENJOY getting ready for Fall at your house! I am certainly enjoying it at my house!

Sunflowers look great in Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall! I use them for all seasons. I have even used them in a Christmas tree one year and it turned out absolutely beautiful.

Don't forget to try your hand at curling their stems. That can really add extra interest to your design by giving it a little something that no one would expect to see.

Voila… The Finished Product: "Sunflower Garden"

In anticipation of Fall, I have bundled two of my Fall DVDs together with my

Quick Tips…

Did you know that ALL of the retail stores already have EVERYTHING they are going to get in for the Christmas season? They may not have all of these flowers, greenery, and other items on their sales floor yet, but you can bet they already have ALL that they are going to receive in their storeroom!

And, the BEST part is that they are already reducing their new "wares" for the upcoming Christmas and Fall Seasons. In this tough economy, the big chain stores certainly DO NOT want to get stuck with tons of inventory that has to eventually be reduced from 75 to 90% off after Christmas is over.

Although disheartening for these stores, it is good for the shoppers. I have been watching these sales, and I can buy just about anything I need for my Christmas decorating, and/0r Christmas wreath-making right now. And, I can get these items anywhere from 40 to 50% off which is a substantial savings!

Watch your papers this weekend, and next week! Start purchasing supplies if you make your own wreaths, or start shopping for decorations to use in your home… IT IS THE PERFECT TIME!

Ladybug Wreaths Affiliate Sales…Make Money Telling Your Friends

By Admin | August 19, 2011

"Ladybug Wreaths Affiliate Sales" By, Nancy Alexander

Make Money Telling Your Friends!…

Make Money Telling Your Friends About a Great Deal?

Imagine you have just found a fantastic deal on a product you love…
And your sister loves the same product…

What would you do?

You'd tell her! Of course you would!

I called my sister when I found a deal on a laptop she was wanting or Microsoft Office deals when she needed an upgrade. When I was looking for bookshelves, she called me when she discovered a sale at Ikea.

We like to help others out and share information that we think might be helpful.

How would you like to make money when you tell your family or friends about these deals?

This is known as affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing enables you to track who you tell about a deal and earn a commission if someone buys through your link.

There are marketers who make a six figure income promoting affiliate links. I prefer to recommend only products that I use and like. When my sister asked me what fish oil I liked, I told her Pharmax and gave her my affiliate link. She gladly used my link because she knew that our nutritionist had recommended a particular brand of premium fish oil and she knew that I would research and find the best priced source!

Since I am an Internet marketer, people ask me about hosting or domains or software that I use. They know that I have tried many providers and my experience will save them time and money. They are happy that I get some small compensation for sharing my knowledge with them.

If you have bought any of Nancy's DVDs or e-Books you know that she sells quality products that work! If your sister or friend wanted to learn how to make wreaths, it would be natural for you to direct them to Nancy. Now we are making it possible for you to earn a commission every time someone buys through your recommendation.

Nancy recently added three products that you can sell as an affiliate. Two of the products are special deals on DVD sets that are perfect for fall and Christmas wreaths. The other product is Nancy's highly acclaimed e-Book: "Secret Vendor List."

Find out how you can promote these products here: http://bestofnancy.com/affiliates.

Yearning For Fall

By Admin | August 12, 2011

"Yearning For Fall" By, Nancy Alexander

Want to Feel The Chill of Fall in the Air…

Yes, I am yearning for fall when I walk outside into this humid heat which engulfs our lives right now.

The "dog days" of summer literally knock me down as I venture outdoors only for a very short trip to the car, or the mailbox. This probably affects me a little more than most of you since it certainly doesn't do anything to improve my fibromyalgia and muscle pain. It only worsens it!

I love to sit on my shady back porch every day. I nestle down into my grandmother's old, large, comfy wicker rocker to read and thank God for my many blessings. Lately that has been impossible! nullI end up running back inside. The cool air comforts the headache that attacked me as I ventured outside as I breath the fresh, cool air back into my lungs.

So, yes…I am yearning for fall – my favorite time of year. I love the brightly colored pumpkins and gourds which I purchase or pull out from the bins in my shop as I ready myself to make richly colored wreaths. Since I would LOVE to fill my porches with pumpkins, last year, I even tried to grown my own from seed! Well, that was a disaster in this heat! I don't think I'll try that one again. lol

My fall wreaths will be filled with large yellow sunflowers…
in addition to red, yellow, orange, or purple dahlias and spider mums. Mustard yellow Black-Eyed Susan's accent so many wreaths with their loose, airy appeal. Fall leaves in multi colors of yellow, orange or red are lined up waiting to adorn each of my creations.

I have so much ribbon on the shelves in my shop just waiting to be made into lush, multi-looped bows with many streamers. The ribbon rolls of fall colors are literally jumping off the shelves while begging: "pick me"…. "pick me"….

You may think I'm a bit early thinking about fall and decorating for this wonderful season, but, it is almost the middle of August. I start my fall decorating in September wanting to make sure I can enjoy my favorite colors as long as possible.

Would it make the heat a little more bearable if you knew cooler weather were just around the corner? It does me. I am starting to pull out my personal fall decorations today. I can't wait to get out our Hallmark dancing ghosts and pumpkins which make our grandchildren squeal with delight.

My suggestion to you is Get Started Early! The hobby stores are filled with wonderful new colors right now. And…most of the time, you can find these florals reduced. Take a look. I'll bet you will be surprised! (HINT: They usually alternate weeks when these are reduced, so if they aren't this week, they certainly will be next week!)

These are things I look for this time of year – during a sale, of course!
  • Large and middle sized pumpkins
  • Stems of fall colored leaves
  • Autumn or fall "welcome" signs
  • Best selections of ribbon are out right now

Fall is such a short season with Christmas decorating coming earlier and earlier. Most hobby stores have already received all of the fall items they will receive and are reducing them immediately.

So, buy while the supplies are plentiful.
Why NOT start putting it out early and give yourself a breath of fresh air?

Quick Tip

Decorate With Honeysuckle Vine?

If I'm asked once, I've been asked a hundred times: How do your wreaths look so unique and gorgeous? And why are they so long-lasting? Well, it's Honeysuckle and, of course, our "Wild Birch Wreaths". But we are talking about honeysuckle today… such a simple answer! Honeysuckle is the true secret to our products' long-lasting durability.

Your first observation might be that, sure, Honeysuckle certainly gives your creations that wild, woodsy, and natural look. It also provides perfect resting places for bird nests and other critters. It may even help enhance the shape of the wreath. But what you can't see is that it adds strength and durability to the wreath.

In fact, when I make a character wreath, some of the sentimental pieces used in those can be made of wood or pottery and can be quite heavy. Honeysuckle to the rescue!

For example, if I want to add a clay pot to the wreath, I tie the honeysuckle into a ring and slide the pot into the ring — securing it with glue, and then covering it with fresh mosses. The honeysuckle vine will hold such an addition securely and generally enhances or adds to the strength of the wreath base.

If you choose to use Honeysuckle in your wreaths, harvesting it from the trees, and then twisting it into many loops and curls is definitely so much fun — and so rewarding too!

Is Heat Killing Your Plants!

Is Heat Killing Your Plants!

Container Gardens are the Answer…

WHISKEY BARRELS MAKE GREAT CONTAINERS!

A friend filled me in a long time ago on her secret to keeping all of her container flowers alive in the summer heat.  I was upset because I had invested a lot in beautiful flowers that spring.  We were having company several times that summer, as well as a party, so I thought I did really good thing planning ahead as I planted many pots full of every kind of flower imaginable.  They were gorgeous!!  I wanted each to grow deep roots, and then thrive in the summer heat.  I was so faithful…I watered them on a regular bases; every day at first, and then as they became more established maybe every 2 to 3 days or so. null

Well, they did thrive until the "summer heat" really hit that year.  It was a dramatically hot year just as this one is right now for all of us!  I learned from a dear friend that I had made one very costly mistake.

All of my beautiful new clay pots and colorful painted containers were sized medium to small.  I did not have enough soil in them to hold moisture for even one day.  The summer heat was really drying them out making me have to water more than once a day.

My friend's secret was to use whiskey containers or barrels.  And…WOW… did that make a difference.  I drilled holes in the bottom of my barrels for good drainage, and then filled the bottoms with empty water bottles, and some of those white packing peanuts.  A good grade of potting soil is also a plus along with those little pearlite balls which soak up water , releasing it as the soil dries out.   Now,  my container flower gardens can go for several days without adding extra water.

This solution was the answer.  My plants lasted all summer long, and I cut down my $450.00 water bill to less than $100.00!

Every year now, all of my annuals and perennials which are not planted in the ground go into whiskey barrels.  I use a large mix of flowers such as you see in the one to the right, always making sure I pick a perennial that will live there all year, and then planting annuals all around to add color and texture for the long summer months.

Oh, and I absolutely LOVE using potato vines in these container gardens along with trailing ivy and grassed.  I use lots of greens in these along with several beautiful blooming flowers.  Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Kind of like when I am designing a wreath… Could this be where I get some of my Wreath ideas from?  TeeheeHee…..

The Gift of Laurie

By Admin | July 5, 2011

The Gift of Laurie!

I Want You to Meet my Friend
Laurie Elmore Thompson,
an Amazing Gift From God…

I have felt led for quite some time to introduce you to my dear friend Laurie Thompson, of http://LaurieThompsonMinistries.com
Laurie is an amazing woman with an amazing spirit and an amazing ministry.

You see, Laurie was in a tragic accident when she was only fourteen years old.  She had been a strong young woman who had many friends and was very active in school.  She rode horses and played basketball as she was involved in all the things a normal girl her age loved to do.

I have known Laurie for many years, though not quite as well as my husband as he sang in the choir with her.  I loved to listen to her amazing voice and truly admired her strength, and her joy along with a smile and a spirit despite her handicaps.

For about 2 years, I felt drawn to this young woman in some mysterious way – to her witness – her life – and her story.  Laurie is now partial paraplegic, paralized from the knees down.  She walks with an unsteady gate as she uses her constant companion…her cane

Then one day I received a "friend request" from Laurie in Facebook.  Laurie and I soon became best friends!  Through this friendship, God has shown me He continues to follow through with His plans for my life in awesome ways, but in doing so, He has ended up using my own life to complete His plans in the life of another, my new friend, Laurie.

Laurie and I meet every Tuesday now.  Our weeks are not complete unless we can talk every day, work together, and pray together.

You see, I thought God brought Laurie into my life at a particularly hard time — a time when I really needed a friend, and a prayer-partner, as well as some of the peace and joy which radiated from her smile and her spirit.  He has used Laurie in my life in ways unimaginable and miraculous!

But God's plans are more miraculous that we can ever imagine, because he used me in Laurie's life with my own talents and gifts from Him…as well as my partner Linda!

God's Plans

I Know the Plans I Have for You!
"For I know the plans I have for you, 'declares the LORD', plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11

God also had other plans for bringing us together.  Laurie needed a new ministerial website.  My partner, Linda Joseph offered to design a website for Laurie saying… "If the sky was the limit, what kind of website would you want?"

Here it is:  http://www.LaurieThompsonMinistries.com

I was able to go with Laurie to her parent's farm to take pictures of her for her website and Ministry.  I took over 800 pictures that day!  I still consider myself somewhat of a novice when taking pictures, but God steadied my hands that day!

The pictures I took were some of the best I have even taken!  Some of these pictures are in her Website header above (Designed by Linda's daughter, Kelsey).

If you click on the link below, you can listen to one of the songs Laurie wrote and recorded;  "I Can Do All Things":

http://animoto.com/play/FTVA8y2zEnlD1IVWW1WMQw?utm_source=nancysramblings.com&utm_medium=player&utm_campaign=player

You can also view some of my pictures of Laurie as you listen to this beautiful song.

Styles, Trends, and Colors…

Timeless Decorating!

Styles, Trends, and Colors…

What is your decorating style?  Is your style timeless, or does it change with every new style and trend for each season?  I learned a valuable lesson a long time ago, which totally changed my "decorating style".  Mine is now timeless!!

But, I'll have to admit…there were years early on in my life when my style wasn't timeless…yes… I did it too!  Oh boy!  Did I really do it!  I changed colors with every trend.  When blue and yellow and white were so popular, I really did paint the walls blue and used those off-white ruffled country curtains which were gathered and tied back into "swoops".   Oh… yuck!  I am sorry if any of you are still using those, but I quickly became very tired of looking at blue walls along with my country curtains!

My life – my home – and my style are so totally different now that I look around sometimes to see where that other woman went!  Was it really me?  Or was it someone who took over my body for a while and had some totally weird decorating ideas?

Well, whoever it was…she is gone, Thank Heavens!  She (Nancy) came to her senses, and now loves her home, her colors, and her style!  I wouldn't dare stick with only one, or two, or three colors when decorating.  I laugh sometimes when I am writing about decorating or my home because I can purchase anything in any color that I like, and it will "go" in my home!  Do you know why?null

My home is filled with every color! Yes, you did hear me right.   There are some colors which I am just naturally drawn to, so you will find more of those in my home. But, nonetheless, there is not a single color I would be afraid to add. It is a good feeling to know that something I really like – no matter what the color – will look really good in my home.

Here is a hint:  Always choose basic colors for wall paint that would match any other color. When choosing fabric for a sofa, pick a design whether it is a plaid, or a floral which has many colors in it. This way, as you introduce more colors into your home there is something which ties them all together.

As you can see in the picture above of our bedroom, the walls are painted a clean, light color which does not clash with any color I choose to use.  Don't ever use white for your walls, however.  White is way too "stark" a color and really does not accent other colors you may use.  In this room, I have used many colors…and on the other side which you do not see, there are many more!  But…the small sofa in the middle has every color which I used! Actually, I can move this couch into any room in my home and it looks great!  It has been in many rooms, since I move furniture around quite often!

Lately in Best Of Nancy, our members have been discussing Styles, Trends and Colors in Floral designs.  If you would like to join in our "lively" discussions, check out our new, innovative, and instructional membership site at:  http://www.BestOfNancy.com.

 Business Planning Made Easy!
Before you start your new project, I would recommend that you take a few hours to put together your business plan and strategy. When you take the time to lay out where you want to go, it is much easier to make decisions about what you do next because 'what you do next' is going to be supporting your goals.

It is also helpful when you are looking for how to invest in your business. The #1 question you need to ask yourself about each purchase: Will this purchase help me to achieve my business goals?

I have put together a report that you can download for free. Answering the questions in this report will enable you to get started on your business planning. (NOTE: This is just a subset of the 60 page report in the BestofNancy members area.)

The report covers:

     1.  Where are you today?
     2.  Where do you want to be?
     3.  What do you need to get there?

Yard Sale Treasures – Secrets

Yard Sale Secrets!

How to Be a Savvy Yard Sale Shopper…

"You can catch Yard Sale Mama, if you really wanna,
on a given Saturday morn.
If the weather is right, she'll be out before light,
To miss this would leave her forlorn!"

This is an exerpt from a poem my hubby wrote about me a few years ago!  You see, I have sort of a reputation in Anderson.  Actually everyone wants to go to yard sales with me because I really do find unbelievably, exceptional "stuff" on a regular basis.  I am flatttered, I am honored, and I do enjoy friends going with me from time to time…but truth be known, I can move much faster all by myself!

nullOkay my dear friends, you know I don't want to hurt any feelings here — I really do love the company, but I guess I might be just a little obsessed when it comes to moving from sale to sale as quickly as possible.  I know…yes, I just know…what treasures await and I'm afraid I may be too late!  TeeHeeHee!  (Did you see that, Steve…I rhymed too!  This may have to be added to your poem!)

I'm going to give you a few of my secrets!  If you are new to yard-sale-ing, you really need to go with someone who is experienced the first few times!  (Okay…I can't believe I really said that!  And yes, you can all remind me of that this Saturday morning!)  My experience was first developed when I was owner and managing partner of a business women's cooperative – "Straw Basket @ Brook Green Court".

We had five partners and up to 50 consignees at any given time.  I kept the books, my partners and I priced the items as well as displayed them.  We knew what price to put on an item for it to sell fast; we knew what customers were really looking for and didn't mind paying a tidy sum for, and I learned very quickly that many of these precious "treasures" could be found at yard and estate sales for unbelievably cheap prices.

In my new Yard Sale book I tell you and show you pictures of many of these items that I am always on the lookout for at yard sales.  These are things you can use to spruce up your own home or you can opt to clean or paint a little to resell and earn some pretty good cash.  FRAMES, FRAMES, FRAMES… I cannot stress these enough!  The picture at the right shows some of the frames I have purchased and painted.  They are so easy to paint!  It is very inexpensive to put a mirror in an old painted frame.  You can even purchase windows like I have in the bottom of the picture.  Have you seen one of these with a mirror in it?  So pretty!!! Frames and old windows can be purchased for $1 to $3.

Another favorite of mine is small tables.  Use these on a porch, or to sit beside a chair, a couch, or a bed.  You can find some really pretty tables with pretty lines.  Don't look at the paint or the finish, and don't even worry if the legs are a little wobbly.  All of these can be fixed very easily and you will end up with an absolutely beautiful table.

The table to the left cost me only $5.00 and look how beautiful it turned out.  I painted it white and then used green and yellow accents on it – aging it a little with the same paint mixed with a little water.  This didn't take very long at all, and look how gorgeous!

The sweet yellow table below was falling apart when I got it for $1.00, but I knew how beautiful it could be.  It has wooden bead work which had come off the sides.  I glued it back on so easily, painted it yellow, and use this one all over my house.

Pottery is getting harder to find, but you can still find McCoy, Hull, Majolica, and many more rare pieces at yard sales.  I found a very sweet dish with a bird perched on the side recently.  It had dirty ivy and flowers inside it and you could not even see the bird.  Imagine my surprise when I removed the old flowers and found the sweetest bird!

Yard sales are fun, exciting, and addictive.  You can furnish your child's room, stock a nursery, or re-do your whole house.  You can earn money selling your treasures at consignment stores.  Yes…you can get addicted…but that's not a bad thing!

Meet Julie Experience Her Success

By Admin | May 9, 2011

Success is Amazing!
Meet Julie…

"You were so calm and you told me more than once,
that I could indeed make that gorgeous wreath,
and you were there to help me!"

Julie is one of our BestOfNancy.com Premium Members!  I noticed immediately after Julie joined our membership site and started posting in the forum that the knowledge she gained from my DVDs along with her love for wreath and floral design had helped her create a wonderful and exciting business!  She has accomplished so much in the short time she has been making and selling wreaths on the Internet!

I recently interviewed Julie and I would like to share a bit of Her story with you.

nullHer story begins in the fall of 2008 when she found my store and fell in love with the "wild & woodsy" design style in my wreaths.

Julie purchased one of my wreaths the day she found LadybugWreaths.com.

She says:  "On your website, I was able to see actual clips of your how-to videos.   That is what really intrigued me to purchase a DVD later that day."

"You were so calm and you told me more than once, that I could indeed make that gorgeous wreath, and you were there to help me!"  Julie says it was my unique style which reminded her of the "gardener within" and made her want to purchase a wreath, and then learn to design them herself!

Julie started out purchasing a double DVD set, "Welcome to My Garden", and also "Ribbons & Bows"…then right after those, she purchased "All That Glitters."   She first made a fall wreath which was big, lush and gorgeous, saying:  "My door was the envy of my neighbors and I got many complements…friends and even a complete stranger wanted me to make one for them!  I was SHOCKED and unprepared…but I was also intrigued.  Could I really make wreaths to sell?"

In my "Ladybug Wreaths" business, my goal is to motivate my customers and members, so I asked Julie how I motivated her?  "You kept "talking to me" through your videos.  You gave me the courage to try because you told me several times that I could do it…I could make this wreath, you can sell this online, you can do it, take it one step at a time, review the videos as much as you need to, etc.  So it gave me confidence to take the "big step" and I eventually opened my online website and store!"

Thank you SO MUCH Julie!  You say that I have inspired you, but you really are an inspiration to me!!

I am so proud to show you Julie's Website:  http://southerncharmwreaths.com

I want to see you succeed just like Julie so I have decided to give you a
super discount on my two latest DVDs!

LadyBug Wreaths is Blooming!

By Admin | April 19, 2011

Ready For Easter?

Spring Months Flying by…

I know, I know…I can hardly believe it myself!  Spring months are on their way, and this weekend is Easter!

Where has time gong?  It is flying by so fast!  Since Easter is this Sunday, we'll talk just a little about quick and easy ways to decorate!  We actually had our Easter celebration last weekend.  Our children and grandchildren were all here from Charleston.  We had so much fun!  I purchased some of those egg-dying kits I used to use as a child to dye eggs.  I was disappointed to find that they no longer add the clear wax crayons you used to find in their kits.  But, here is an idea – use crayons to color circles and zig-zags on your eggs before you dye them…it works wonderfully!

If you don't have an Easter wreath, you can use your spring or summer wreath with a little addition! All of the craft and hobby stores have Easter decorations half price right now.  Find a cute bunny, a wooden one or a stuffed one is just fine.  Get one which is not too large or too small for your wreath.  A good rule of thumb is a size that would fit right in the middle circle of your wreath.  You can attach this bunny, or other decoration by tying it in with a pipe cleaner.  And, just remove it right after Easter!  Great idea… and Voila!  You have an Easter wreath!

It's a GREAT time to purchase a really cute Easter Basket to be a centerpiece on your table.  Be creative…adding some of your hand-dyed eggs, maybe a little ivy, along with some tasty chocolates.  You don't need to have children around to enjoy Easter!  And let's not forget the REAL reason for the Easter season….

LADYBUG WREATHS IS NOW TAKING ORDERS FOR MOTHER'S DAY!  Email me:  nancy@ladybugwreaths.com  to place your order!  Or, CLICK HERE to view samples of custom wreaths already purchased.
Mother's Day is quickly approaching!  We are already taking orders for Mothers, Aunts, or dear friends.  Make sure to get your orders in to us as soon as possible.  We'll be happy to attach a beautiful card and ship your wreath to that special "someone" you want to remember on that day!  A custom made wreath will always remind them of "you"!

Below, in the Quick Tip section, is just one of the many questions I get.

Quick Tip

How Do I Go About Pricing My Wreath, Floral or Other Item?

There is one question that I am asked all of the time. This is one that everyone needs to understand and know the answer to when beginning to sell online or offline.

On the surface, this would seem to be an easy question to answer. But this question, and particularly answering it correctly, is critical to making it worthwhile to set up and sustain an internet business so that you can enjoy a steady income stream.

I'll be honest…I have struggled with this question and its answer for many, many years! There is one thing that I have learned in all my years of experience – you have to be able and willing to not only calculate your costs accurately, but also be willing to change your pricing strategies at a moment's notice.

There are many factors that affect the pricing of your goods; some you can name immediately, but many that you have never thought about. Costs of your florals, container and shipping are easy factors to think of, but can be much harder to determine accurately. And remember, these change constantly. You have to be on your toes to keep up with the changes in your costs or you will be selling your wares at a loss. Your business will become a non-profit business…when you didn't intend for that to happen!

Other factors to consider when you price your goods are harder to calculate. Things like the economy in your area, your customers' buying habits, the exclusivity of your products, the quality of your products, whether you have competition near you or not. We're just scraping the surface of things that can affect your pricing strategies.

Your questions about pricing your goods, as well as a host of other factors you have probably never thought of, will be explored, discussed and answered on the new "Best of Nancy" membership site. With these answers, you can confidently price your goods and be watchful for the factors that can change your pricing, keeping you and your business profitable!

If this is of any interest at all, then I encourage you to go over to BestofNancy.com right now and join. We are only allowing 20 members at this time.

Throw Open Your Doors…Let in The Light

By Admin | February 14, 2011

It's Spring…Almost!

Throw Open Your Doors…Let in Light

Yes, that's right! You heard me! We are almost there in the South! And, I'm soooo sorry that you aren't quite there yet in other parts of the country! I really don't mean to rub it in. Really I don't…well, maybe…only just a little!!!! There is so much that I do in our home and also in my LadybugWreaths Design Studio to welcome spring into our abode!

Let's see…what is first on my list??!! Well, if at all possible, I choose a day to begin my Spring makeover when the temperatures rise just enough that I can open my doors (even if I have to wear a sweatshirt or sweater), I don't care but it just gets me in the mood! I am personally ready to SCREAM: It Is Spring!! We talked some in the last newsletter about getting all of the Christmas decorations put away. I hope you have done that by now… or am I going to have to send the "Season" police to your home to help you switch over??

Okay, now that we have that straight, we also talked about lining up old vases or white containers on your kitchen window with cuttings of fresh mini leaf ivy in them. Guess what? It is rooted by now and ready to put in your flower containers – Yea! Oh, and I have already switched my pillows or pillow covers over to a nice, bright and colorful fabric — preferably with a floral design. That works well unless your throw pillows dress up a couch that is floral. If that’s the case, you need to go with a pretty stripe, plaid, or solid pillow.

Then, after sprucing up a little inside by brightening things, I go out to my back porch. It is still cold, but there are things that will live in my pots.

Looking at this picture to the left, you can see two pots which sit on my potting table. I keep ivy or some other greens growing in these pots year round.

I have several other yard-sale finds which I sit around on my porch to spruce it up for the spring and summer months.

Look at this stained glass window to the right! I actually have four of them. I only keep one on my porch, but it adds so much, and looks so beautiful when the afternoon sun hits it shining through the colorful stained glass.

To brighten up your outdoor living space, you don’t necessarily need a spot where a treasure such as this can be hung. Just prop it up in an interesting space where you think it would look good!

And below is a fern which lives all winter long. I really don’t like to have empty clay pots sitting around all winter, so I fill them with year-round greens and always put a pansy or two in each pot to add some color when those drab days of winter appear!

If you have areas that need painting, and you can afford to do so, this is the perfect time of year! Nothing brightens and spruces up a home (inside and out) like fresh, beautifully colored paint. (Hint, Hint…Lowe’s and Home Depot usually have cans of “OOPS” paint which customers returned. You can find good quality paint and great colors for around $5.00 per gallon!)

Sea grass rugs are great under a table and also on a big porch if you have one. You can find those pretty reasonably priced. If you don't have the funds to buy a new one… then hit the yard sales as soon as they start near your home! I have found beautiful rugs at yard sales that I dearly love – expensive ones too for a small fraction of their real value!

Quick Tip

Get Ready for my New DVD; “Buds & Blossoms” How to Make a Beautiful Arrangement!

My quick tip of the day is….GET READY!! Start looking at flower stems. Go to your local craft and hobby stores! Watch for sales – they are plentiful this time of year – yes, even for new spring and summer stems!

I have just filmed a new DVD!! And, YES, this DVD is the one soooo many of you have been asking for! In this DVD, I will be teaching you how to make the beautiful arrangement shown below. The size is perfect for the center of your table, a sideboard, or just about anywhere you need some eye-catching color. This arrangement will definitely put winter on the run!

The good thing is you can change types and colors of flowers to match your décor. You might want to start searching for different types, sizes, and colors of flowers which you would like to see in an arrangement for that special spot in your home. And, of course, you will definitely need a mix of greens. If you have any of my DVDs already, then you know that I always mix many shades and types of greens in everything I do!

“Colors of Spring Will Melt the Snow!”

By Admin | January 19, 2011

Spring…Please Hurry!

Valentine's Day & Mother's Day…

I don't know about you, but the dark, dreary days of winter always get me down! I find myself watching all the birds outside my office window and dreaming of Spring. I actually can imagine feeling the first warmth of the sun upon my face. I watch for the budding trees, flowers peeping up to open their little faces to the sky (my daffodills, especially) and being able to get out and dig in my dirt, reviving each and every secret blossom that is hidden beneath the hard, crusty, snow-covered ground right now! I LOVE the smell of dirt, I LOVE the feel on my hands, and I LOVE planting flowers in so many different colors. If you know me at all by know, then you know I like lots of color! And…I mix those colors in my garden, just as I do in my wreaths!

So, what do I do when there is snow on the ground and I'm ready for spring? Well, I do the obvious…I make it spring inside! First thing is to finish taking down all of the Christmas decorations which you may still have up — and I have to admit — I do still have a few. Well, those are going…TODAY! Next, I store all of my red and green, or dark colored throws and pillows and replace them with bright beautiful florals, stripes and plaids. Hint, Hint… Now, you'll find out later (in my next EBook – "Yard Sale Diva") that having pillows for each season is NOT expensive! I have found some of the most beautiful accent pillows I own at yard sales. I have plenty of them, and I do switch them around for each season…even on my porches! Just doing this, changes the entire feel of our home.

There are MANY EXCITING THINGS GOING ON IN OUR BUSINESS! We are planning for the entire year and will be offering many new videos on subjects you have requested. If there is a video you might like, please drop me an email, and we'll try to add it in, as we are brainstorming right now! There are also three (3) new books planned for this year.

With Valentine's Day approaching it is time to put up your Valentine Wreath, your heart decorations in reds and pinks, maybe a dish of valentine candy along with any other decorations you may have. All of this sprucing up will get your home ready for Mothers Day and Easter also!

The first one is "Yard Sale Diva"!! You guessed it!!!! Yes it is on yard sales. I have become somewhat of an expert in my hometown when people see all of my special "finds" from these sales. EVERYONE wants to go with me! So, as soon as spring arrives, those who are not at my house before 5:30 a.m. get left behind! We have had two car loads of women at one time flying from tag sale to tag sale. I move pretty fast when it comes to these early morning treasures so you need your running shoes on to keep up with me!  (And don't tell….but….I tend to make lots of U-turns in the early morning hours when no one else is on the street!) :) :)

In this new Yard Sale book, I will instruct and prepare you in acquiring GREAT bargains for your home or even for resale! Knick-nacks, picture frames, furniture, mirrors, and china are some of my favorite "treasures". Another section of this book will also show you how to paint, distress, and even paint ivy, flowers, birds, ladybugs, etc. on your special piece. As an extra special surprise, my sweet hubby will follow us around several mornings with our flip video camera showing you what to look for, and definitely what to purchase!

Tips To Welcoming
Spring Into Your Home!

I have collected white pottery through the years, so now is the time I pull out a lot of the containers, vases, and pitchers. Line several of them side-by-side on your kitchen window and fill them with clippings of ivy from yours or a neighbor's yard. Then by spring, your ivy will be rooted. It will be GREAT to mix in with your clay pots of annuals or perennials.

Do you have a tall vase, urn, or container? Fill it with artificial sunflowers. There are many beautiful ones out there at very reasonable prices. This beautiful yellow color brings spring inside even when it is not spring!

This is a good one! I save all of my really good magazines and go back through them quite often. I have many of them back at least 10 years. I go through these looking at the covers and find some that I like lying around on tables, sideboard, coffee tables, etc. I match the covers with the rooms I sometimes put them in. Just look at my bedroom table below. I just love the colors and flowers on the front of this Country Living magazine lying beside some of my "treasures".

Oh, and one other thing just came to mind. I pull out all of my gardening and bird books, and stack them around. Now, I know if you do all these things in your home, you'll get spring feer just as I have.

I Wish You a MERRY Christmas! Blessings…Nancy

Ready for Parties!

I'm Picking My Fresh Greens Today!

I am on my annual treck today to pick many fresh greens.  I know, I should have done it before now…and I usually do, but helping our children move to Charleston has thrown us just a little behind.  As a matter of fact, our big Christmas party this year will be after Christmas!  But, that's okay…just think of all the great bargains and sales!

Now, I know that most of you have pots sitting around which had flowers which have now been killed by the cold weather.  Don't put up those pots and containers!  Leave the roots in them — cut off the tops of the dead flowers and fill them to overflowing with many of the evergreens and red berries which can be found this time of year.  Your containers will look so rich and colorful.  And if you keep the dirt wet these will last for weeks!

I want you to look for beautiful large, rich green magnolia branches — I mean the really large ones!  They can stick out the top of your container.  Then I always want to use cedar, white pine, scotch pine, or hemlock (which is a great lighter green color), holly berries, and of course large clusters of nandina berries.  I don't just stick to Christmas greens either.  I grab anything that I think is interesting!  And I absolutely love anything that will drape out of my containers helping give them a wild and wispy look.

If you have lost the link to my bow-making video, I am enclosing a link of this short video again.  It shows me making a bow and  explaining all of the steps again.

Quick Tip!

If You Have Outside Lights…Remove Timers!

I always keep our outside lights on timers to save on the power bill, but this last week before Christmas, I just have to remove the timers.  It is such a pretty, and peaceful sight.   I enjoy – so much – looking out my windows any time of the day or night to see my white, twinkling lights.

As a matter of fact, my husband and I were just talking last night and decided to leave the lights on our ornamental weeping willow tree which is right beside our garden path.  We want to be able to turn them on every night and enjoy looking at them through the many glass doors and windows which look out onto our back porch and into our garden.
