WOW! I cannot believe it is 2012! It has been such a busy year here for us! God has blessed us immensely! Last year, our older son, Matt, took an amazing job in Charleston, SC, moving his family (along with 3 of our grandchildren) with him. But, with only a three to four hour drive, we now get to visit our most favorite destination often! I won't take up much of your time today. You're been busy these last few weeks taking down Christmas decorations, shopping for those wonderful bargains, and enjoying family.

While looking for bargains, I hope you didn't forget to check with your local hobby stores, if you enjoy making wreaths, or other types of florals. This is an amazing time to find GREAT bargains there.

Two years ago, we happened to go into a Hobby Lobby in a nearby town the first week in January. They had literally JUST moved all Christmas merchandise which was left over to one isle — an unadvertised special — and reduced it to 90% off.

My husband, bless his heart, saw this first and pointed it out to me. We loaded up THREE buggies with garlands, ornaments, and flowers, and paid $90.00 for it. Folks, that was $900.00 worth of Christmas merchandise that I was able to pull out the following year and use. Needless to say: I WAS THRILLED!

I am in the mood for new spring wreaths! I have been planning, and thinking, and looking at pictures of wreaths I have made in the past. Boy, am I ready for it this year!

This has been an exciting year for Ladybug Wreaths! We have worked long hours as we released many programs, e-books, videos, and new wreath styles!

This time of year you may catch me reliving the memories of the past when our children were young. We didn’t have much money, but we had each other and had SO MUCH FUN! I remember back when I had time to decorate our home early, bake cookies, cakes, and an unbelievable selection of treats ahead of time. Our home was full of these gooey, yummy, fattening, sugary concoctions! Shopping was finished, gifts were wrapped and under the tree, and the house was perfect, inside and out.

Here's an update on our lives:  things have changed a little around our house from times past! We will still have a “magical” Christmas as we always have, this time enjoying our four grandchildren along with our boys and their wives.

I have been working many long hours lately. These days are spent making, listing, and shipping wreaths, filming videos, and duplicating DVDs for anxious customers. I write on this blog about our lives and our business as often as I can. And…I am being interviewed by an author who is writing “my story”.

Then, thanks to my dear friend and partner, Linda Joseph, we’re updating my website, which is long overdue. Time is spent choosing colors, fonts, logos and styles to give LadybugWreaths.com the functionality it needs as well as the look we want it to have.

Our coaching site, “BestOfNancy.com” is growing by leaps and bounds with many new members! This most certainly is where my heart is. This site has been a “gift from God” as Linda and I help, encourage, and teach many women wanting to sell the fruits of their new-found hobby online. This is where God has led me to make a difference in the lives of others as we have so many plans for the upcoming year.

For the last few weeks, we have been talking about wreaths.  This time of year, we are all naturally thinking of wreaths, wreaths for our front doors, wreaths for our back doors, large wreaths, small wreaths, and wreaths of different shapes.  Not only are they beautiful on your front and back doors, but they add so much to the inside of your home as well.

I once designed a “baking” wreath for a customer with a rolling pin, an empty flour bag stuffed with cotton, a whisk, an empty baking powder can, a pot holder, and a white baker’s hat along with other kitchen utensils.  Our theme was mostly red and white with the green mixed in, of course.  It was an amazing addition to her large, spacious kitchen
.

Do you know the history of the wreath when you are proudly displaying yours?  This history actually goes back to the ancient culture of the Persian Empire.  Wreaths were called diadems meaning “a thing bound around.”  A diadem was a band of fabric worn around the brow of a royal bonnet, symbolizing royalty.

Wreaths made of various leaves were also used as prizes during the Greek Olympics.  These were made from olive or laurel leaves.  This is where the wreath became a symbol of peace.

Diadems and head wreaths didn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the world’s elite.  Soon the upper classes of their countries were designing headdresses of their own – adding precious jewels and metals, they became very ornate.

In time, all social classes wore wreaths to celebrate special occasions and to honor religious holidays.  The time came when there was a transition from “wreath as a head ornament” to “wreath as a wall decoration”.  Someone probably loved their festival headdress so much that it was displayed on their wall or door.

You don’t have to be among the upper classes or the elite to display a beautiful wreath.  Now, the wreath is a symbol of “Welcome” to neighbors and friends as it continues to be an important symbol of holiday decorating.

A wreath reflects the creative style and personality of its maker.  These styles are very diverse as each wreath-maker uses many different materials which may “strike their fancy”.

I tell my students often that they can learn the "basics" of wreath design from me.  I will teach them well – making sure they know how to attach anything into their wreath very securely. I teach my students which flowers and colors look good together, where I would place them, and how to tie a beautiful bow.  But my main goal in teaching wreath design is helping you find and bring out your own style.

I am sure there is a wonderfully unique style inside each and every one of you.  You can create a beautiful wreath by duplicating my style and design, but, as you make more wreaths – YOU will definitely begin to sine through!  That's when I think… no, I KNOW… that I have succeeded in teaching you more than just the basics of wreath design.  I have helped you uncover a special "treasure" within yourself that you didn't know was there!

We have been talking about making wreaths lately, and how to find your own style.  So many of you who want to make your own wreaths really don't know where to start.  Well, in this series of newsletters, my goal is to help you find out what you really like in a wreath.  Then you can learn from my DVDs how to make your own special wreath.  And, if you want to carry your hobby further, I can also teach you how to sell your specially designed wreaths online, bringing in extra household income.

 

There really are MANY different types and styles of wreaths.  First, let's start with wreath bases.  I personally prefer my own "Wild Birch Wreaths".  These are made exclusively for me by a young mother in the hills of Kentucky.  They are special, different, and unique.  Would you like to know what drew me to them at first? 

 

Well, it was the "wild" style of the birch and beech stems radiating out all around from the tighter center circle of the wreath.  Below you can see an example of exactly what I'm talking about.  This is a Christmas wreath which was just shipped out a couple of days ago from the Ladybug Wreaths Studio.  It is a perfect example of "Wild Birch" & "Wild & Woodsy"!

 

 

 

 

 

Many of you might like a tighter, more compact wreath style.  These can be made with a grapevine wreath as the base.  They are woven a little tighter and DO NOT have the wild sticks radiating out all around.  Your finished wreath will have the more compact look rather than the loose and airy look you get from wild birch.

Christmas wreaths are normally, but not always, on the green Christmas wreath bases you can find anywhere.  They are sold in every craft and hobby store this time of year.  They come in all shapes, sizes and types.  Some are smaller with just a little greenery – all of one type – and then others are much fuller with a larger mix of Christmas greens.  These can have pine cones, berries, or other materials already added to them.

 

 

 

 

 

The wreath above is one of our beautiful Christmas wreaths made on a Christmas green base rather than the wild birch.  You can tell by looking at this wreath that we like to also add 'everyday greens' to our Christmas wreath bases.  There is ivy, wisteria, green leafy fillers, and much more!  This is one thing that "Ladybug Wreaths" is well known for!

 

There are other bases used from time to time, but these are ones which I really do not prefer, so I don't use them.  These include straw wreath forms, Styrofoam forms which you can stick stems into, and ribbon wrapped forms.

Displaying Your Wreath…Where & How 

 

 

 

 

I'm often asked how to display these beautiful creations, whether you purchase them, or make your own.  There are many locations in your home where a wreath would add so much warmth.  First of all, I believe that a wreaths on your front door is a must for special holidays!  Actually, I keep a wreath on my front door all the time – changing them out for special seasons and holidays.

 

But, there are other places in your home where a wreath can add that very special touch.  In our home, everyone enters through our back door, so I always make sure to put a wreath there.  A small wreath in a bathroom or a bedroom with some dainty flowers and maybe a sweet bird perched on her nest is a beautiful way to enhance each room by adding more color and texture on the wall.

 

For Christmas, I also have double glass doors which open to our back porch.  I hang green wreaths on the outside of these doors, and have found that it makes the inside much more inviting to have wreaths of the same size hanging back-to-back on the inside of my doors also.

 

There are many places where wreaths are pretty, appropriate, and draw the eye of friends and guests… just be creative!

This is a question I have been asked so often through the years.  WOW, I can't even begin to guess how many times!

 

I take your questions very seriously – I always have.  It is important to me to be able to answer each and every one of them.  Truthfully, I am honored that you ask me, and that you think of me as the expert who can help you.

In order to help you in your quest to learn to make your own wreath, I not only need to tell you how, but I need to show you too!  But, my main goal in this entire process is not only teaching you the basics (which you definitely need to know), but in helping you find your own style.  That is when the "light bulb" comes on in your head and you realize – you just know – that you "have it"! 

 

You have just created something special and beautiful from your own imagination – from colors you love – to materials which strike your fancy – and then putting these materials into your wreath in such a way that is exclusive only to you.  This is when I know that I have succeeded in teaching you to make your own wreath!  This makes me SO happy!

 

 

 

Your questions and your desires to create and learn were the main reasons I started filming instructional DVDs.  I decided that was truly the best way I could help you.  I would dearly LOVE to stand right beside each one of you and guide your hands in the beginning of this process – but that is impossible except for the few of you who do want to come here for one-on-one coaching with me.

 

 

 

 

I needed to figure out a way to talk to you through a camera.  Well, actually there was not "a" camera"… there were 3!  The local film crew I had found to come to our studios to film that first video brought with them three very large, impressive cameras.  There were bright, hot lights shining on my face and in my eyes practically blinding me. 

I was nervous already, so I thought to myself; I can't do this!  I don't like this!  What if I make a mistake?  What if I can't think of anything to say?  You won't believe this, but for the first video, I purchased about 20 sheets of poster paper and wrote on them what I thought I needed to say.  I was surrounded by giant CUE CARDS!  THAT WAS THE MOST HORRIBLE DISASTER!!!!!! I should have held on to the session clips that day – they would make great "bloopers" now!

 

The camera crew stopped me after about 20 'takes' saying this isn't going to work!  Sorry, but we're throwing away all your posters.  All we can see is your eyes going back and forth as you read – it's terrible!

 

So, I started again, but this time with flowers and ribbons in my hands.  My hands were busy – they were happy .  Apparently my brain works much better when my hands are busy.  I started making a wreath as I explained each and every step.  I talked to you about supplies, how to use picks, how to tape stems, and how to anchor each item into your wreath so securely that it would NEVER come out!

As I worked, I told you stories of my family, my life… me!  I showed you each and every step of the design I was working on.  I talked about past design mistakes I had made and and I even made a few right in front of the camera just for you!  (Well, you know, that is part of the learning process, right??)  giggle, giggle… 

 

 

You know what?  That was okay.  You needed to know that everyone makes mistakes, not only when they are new at designing, but even veteran designers.  The key is knowing how to keep right on going as you correct each mistake; making it all come together to be a "gorgeous" finished product in the end.  I have always said that really is the key to being a good designer – no matter what happens while you're making a wreath or an arrangement, it's knowing how to bring it all together in the end that  counts.

 

Well, that day flew by as I taught so many of you how to make your own wreath.  We didn't even stop for a break.  I finished a beautiful wreath, looked at the clock, and couldn't believe my eyes.  Two hours had gone by, and I had not stopped talking the entire time… lol.  The camera men were worn out.  They couldn't believe I had kept going, and going, and going…  But what was more impressive, they couldn't believe that I had not stopped talking the entire time.  They said I was "a natural" in front of a camera — well, I don't know about that, but I do know that I connected with "you" that day and have ever since with the film videos I have made for you.

How Do You Keep Going When You're Physically Down?

Today, as I was going through several subjects that customers have requested I discuss in my newsletter, there is one which keeps coming up over and over again.  Actually, it has been asked on a regular basis for many years now.

 

I have always tried to respond to your questions with a personal note – an email, or a call when necessary.  But, alas, I finally realized it was impossible to answer each and every one.  This is one of the major reasons that www.BestOfNancy.com was formed – to be able to talk to you and answer your questions every day so others could also benefit from the answer to your question at the same time.

 

 

These are some of the questions I have received, all basically asking the same thing:

"What do you do when you're physically down?"

Wow!  Where do I start?

Chronic illnesses are a severe problem for many of you.

 

Pain was the main focus of my life for so many years.  It colored the way I thought and felt, and reacted to the world around me.

It is hard to see the beauty in a flower, a sunset or sunrise, or even a loved one's eyes when you are suffering in silence.  It is hard to think of doing something that would make your day productive when it is clouded with this 'thing' which has such a deep, dark hold on you.

 

 

The answer for me was – and is – "God".

 

I don't know where I would be today without all of the miracles God worked in my life.  I do know that I would not be sitting here at my computer writing to all of you, my friends, students, and faithful followers – were it not for God and all the Miracles "He" has performed in my life – for example, all of the "Professionals" who were finally able to diagnose and treat the causes of my illness.

 

 

I am speechless when I think of the people who were sent into my life to encourage, uplift, inspire, diagnose and help me to heal.

 

Jim Cockrum and I have talked about this many times – we call them "Divine Appointments"!  You may not believe in those, and if so, that certainly is your choice.

 

I don't want to push my faith on you knowing that every person has their own beliefs, but in telling a story of me – "Beautifully, Broken Me" (as my friend Molly Alexander writes in her blog), I cannot forget the obvious and must share with you how I got to this point in my life.  That's what many of you have been asking me all these years.  I do believe God has led me on a path for many years for a specific purpose – that is to be able to help and encourage YOU!
